Several members from Team GreenWood attended the Affinity Insurance Risk Management conference held in conjunction with the National Safety Council Congress & Expo – the largest safety show in the world – in Indianapolis, Indiana.  The National Safety Council is the nation’s leading safety advocate with the mission of eliminating preventable injuries. Project members from 3 different sites represented GreenWood at the event. This year’s theme “Racing to Zero…Safety That Works” provided the backdrop for professional development seminars, learning sessions and networking opportunities.

As a company, GreenWood maintains a steadfast commitment to safety, customer satisfaction and quality services. In order to deliver on these commitments, we implement programs and leverage tools designed specifically for the work environment for continuous improvement. One of the key components to continuous improvement is 5S which is a management philosophy devoted to proper arrangement and orderliness of the workplace (gemba).

The 5S philosophy applies to any work area and is a key tool to eliminate waste also known as muda. Industrial markets typically categorize waste as Overproduction (manufacturing an item before it is needed), Excessive Inventory (Work-in-Progress from overproduction and waiting), Waiting (poor material flow), Motion (unnecessary and inappropriate movement), Transportation (moving product between processes), Rework (quality issues from defects), and Over Processing (use of high cost equipment when it isn’t necessary).

In order to achieve high levels of safety, quality, and productivity, workers must have a conducive working environment that is clean and organized. The elements of 5S are “Common Sense” and simple to learn:

  • Sort – Eliminate whatever is not needed
  • Straighten – Organize whatever remains
  • Shine – Clean the work area
  • Standardize – Schedule regular cleaning and maintenance
  • Sustain – Make 5S a way of life

The benefits and advantages from implementing 5S can be tremendous and quantified:

  • Visual management
  • Improved safety
  • Higher equipment availability
  • Lower defect rates
  • Reduced costs
  • Provides visual organization
  • Improved employee morale
  • Better asset utilization
  • Recognize normal/abnormal
  • Enhanced enterprise image to customers, suppliers, employees, and management

When a company embraces 5S, it is establishing a solid foundation for continuous improvement. Through a team-based approach, workplace organization results in a safer environment with more efficient work processes. Typically, improvements are realized in productivity, quality and employee morale. Because the team takes ownership to manage the entire process, continuous improvement is sustainable.

To mark two years without a recordable incident, safety celebrations were held to recognize our project teams in West Virginia.  Each of these operations perform heavy industrial maintenance work involving electrical, instrumentation, mechanical and civil.  All employees are to be commended for their outstanding safety achievements during this period.

More than 300 personnel from GreenWood and client employees participated in the celebrations. GreenWood prepared the traditional smoked pork for the luncheon and congratulated the West Virginia teams for their safety accomplishments.

A big thank you to everyone for maintaining a safety mindset at all times. Employees that think safe…are safe!

Merck 5 Million - Plaque

GreenWood, Inc., an integrated operations, maintenance and construction solutions provider, celebrates a major safety milestone of 5 million safe work hours at their project site in Virginia. GreenWood delivers various construction related services to this site and has been in a continuous relationship with the client for more than 26 years without a lost time injury.

Key to this accomplishment is GreenWood’s steadfast commitment to safety as implemented through the company’s “Always Aware” safety program. This program emphasizes safe work practices for individuals and employee teams to think, act and remain safe at all times. It complements the overall safety standards set by the client where prevention of incidents, accidents and injuries is an ongoing priority.

GreenWood, Inc., an integrated maintenance, operations and construction solutions provider, was recently recognized for their team leadership at their project location in Athens, Georgia. The Athens Tech Foundation presented the GreenWood planning department with an Outstanding Workforce Leadership (O.W.L.) award which identifies and recognizes businesses for exemplary leadership initiatives. At this site, GreenWood provides total maintenance services including reliability, planning and scheduling, and support services for all manufacturing, operations, and production equipment.

Members of the GreenWood planning department, along with their technical workforce, have made tremendous progress leading the efforts to improve processes related to work orders, preventive maintenance, and planning. The “in progress” work order process and work orders “over 30 days” have seen marked improvement as well as preventive maintenance (PM) on time completion rates. These improvements translate into work process efficiency and equipment reliability gains that create capacity and increase manufacturing throughput.

The Athens Tech Foundation works on behalf of Athens Technical College to provide student benefits through scholarships, GED testing fees, emergency loans and related opportunities, allowing them to complete their education and immediately become part of an educated workforce. It has a direct impact on the community’s economy while transforming lives of the students in the process. GreenWood is a sponsor of the Athens Tech Foundation.

WVO 4 Million Hours (2) 7-16

GreenWood, Inc., an integrated maintenance, operations and construction solutions provider, recently celebrated 4 million safe hours at their West Virginia Operations (WVO) project based in South Charleston, West Virginia. This accomplishment was achieved after fourteen years of continuous operations without a lost time event while supporting multiple clients in the chemical, petro-chemical, and automotive markets.

GreenWood’s leadership team hosted a safety celebration attended by more than 300 personnel from across the project sites. A special barbecue dinner led by GreenWood President Brad Wood and members from the home office marked the event to recognize the safety milestone. Awards commemorating safety program participation were presented to attendees by Jonathan White, WVO safety manager, in appreciation for their safety accomplishments. Area project manager Kenny Steen, alongside Brad Wood, praised the project teams for maintaining safe work environments at all project sites.

As a company, GreenWood emphasizes the importance of safety as a top priority. The company’s “Always Aware” safety slogan serves as the over-arching focal point for all project work. Preparation for daily work always begins to ensure employees think, act and perform safely. This commitment and mindset allowed GreenWood to record their lowest Experience Modification Rating (EMR) in the company’s history while the West Virginia Operations project reached this significant safety milestone.

GreenWood, Inc., an integrated maintenance, construction and workforce solutions provider, announces that Kevin Crittendon, Director of Continuous Improvement, has been elected to serve as Vice Chair of the Carolinas Chapter for the Society of Maintenance and Reliability Professionals (SMRP). SMRP is a nonprofit professional society formed by practitioners to advance the reliability, maintenance and physical asset management industry. SMRP provides value for professionals, individual practitioners and companies who are committed to sustaining best practices within their industries.

In his role, Kevin will be responsible for working alongside the Chair to promote excellence in maintenance and reliability education for people, production and quality processes to improve the work environment. Additionally, Kevin will facilitate information exchange through the SMRP network while providing assistance and guidance to those seeking the Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional (CMRP) designation.

As Director of Continuous Improvement at GreenWood, Inc., Crittendon holds responsibility for maintenance and business process improvements, customer relationship support, standardization of metrics and reporting, development of operational tools, and support for business development efforts. His background includes roles involving Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), Lean/Six Sigma, Cellular Manufacturing and Kaizen (continuous improvement).

Shannon-McKamey

GreenWood, Inc., an integrated maintenance, construction and workforce solutions provider, announces the addition of Shannon McKamey as Project Manager located in Greenville, South Carolina. In this role, Shannon is responsible for management of all capital, maintenance and general staffing support services provided at the customer’s project location.

As a licensed professional engineer, Shannon brings over 20 years of experience in the engineering and technical management industry to this position at GreenWood. His background includes various levels of responsibility in project management, department management, construction management, structural engineering, civil and environmental engineering, estimating and QA/QC engineering.


“We are excited to have Shannon join our team in this key role,” says Brad Wood, President of GreenWood, Inc. “With his extensive experience across numerous aspects of engineering, maintenance and project management, Shannon brings the right balance of leadership and communication skills required to effectively lead our project team. He knows how to apply his analytical and project management talents to achieve the results our clients expect.”

Shannon earned both a B.S. and M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Tennessee. He has also completed additional education through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for Construction Quality Management for Contractors; training in Six Sigma methodology; OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations; and John C. Maxwell Laws of Leadership.

GreenWood, Inc., an integrated maintenance, construction and workforce solutions provider, announces a partnership with BridgeValley Community and Technical College that offers a National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) craft training program in pipefitting. Through this relationship, those seeking piping careers have an opportunity to participate in an internship program that provides classroom instruction at BridgeValley and hands-on training at a GreenWood project site. Within the BridgeValley classroom, students will learn to read and interpret structural drawings, solve mathematical problems for pipefitting, gain insights into process technology, and receive an education in safety, health, and environmental. Students will progress through phases of the NCCER curriculum allowing them to apply learnings to real-world scenarios. Qualified candidates will be considered for employment opportunities that combine on-the-job training with continued classroom studies with the ultimate goal of earning the NCCER Certified Pipefitter designation. All courses are being taught by GreenWood personnel credentialed in the NCCER curriculum.
